Parent & Family Fund Grant Highlight: UCF Creed Art Initiative

An integrated portion of being a Knight is the adherence to the UCF Creed. Comprised of five tenants (Integrity, Scholarship, Creativity, Community, and Excellence), the UCF Creed guides students along the path of success. In 2011, an initiative—called the Creed Art Initiative—was established to supplement understanding and awareness of the UCF Creed in a creative and innovative medium through the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities and Student Care Services.

“Every semester, students are able to submit art that represents any of the five tenants of the UCF Creed: Integrity, Scholarship, Creativity, Community, Excellence,” said Office of Student Conduct Coordinator, Heather Cohen. “This art is then voted on by students, faculty, and staff.”

Though now absorbed under the Office of Student Conduct, as of 2019, the project still upholds the core values of its original manifesto.

“Creed Art Initiative creates a place where students are able to reflect on the values of the UCF Creed and creatively express what it means to them; [it] creates a space for open dialogue about what our institution’s values are, how they see these values being incorporated into their own lives, [and the] initiative gives them a platform to share their talent with hundreds of people,” Cohen said.

Most importantly, all students are encouraged to participate, despite their artistic ability. If they do not wish to submit artwork, they are encouraged to let their voices be heard by voting and receiving their own giveaways, such as t-shirts and water bottles. For the Fall 2019 semester, there were five art submissions that students had the opportunity to vote for. During a one-day period of voting, over 300 students submitted votes.

As the Parent and Family Fund Grant aided in advertising and generating student interest in the project, Cohen’s aspiration for the future is that the grant will continue to—if not increase—student intrigue and participation. Furthermore, for the future, the voting period is looking to be increased to two days, as opposed to one day. An art walking display is also being looked at for the future, to ensure that more students, faculty and, staff can have the opportunity to view the artwork.

Spring 2020 Creed Art Initiative information will become available to students shortly. To encourage your student to take part in the initiative, have them visit https://osrr.sdes.ucf.edu/creedart/, where they can find rules and deadlines for art submissions. They can additionally follow @theUCFCreed on Instagram for information.
